Serves the entire province of Bari, province of Barletta-Andria-Trani, province of Matera, and part of the neighboring provinces of Foggia, Taranto, Potenza. Formerly known as the airport of Bari Palese, from the nearby suburb of Palese-macchie, is located 9 km north-west of the center of Bari.<\/p>\n<p>Other than by taxi (about \u20ac50, 30 min.), you can reach the city from the airport by taking the new <a href=\"http:\/\/treni.aeroportidipuglia.it\">Ferrotramviaria Train<\/a> (\u20ac5, 15 min.), stopping at the main railway station. Another option is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autoservizitempesta.it\/orari.php\" target=\"_blank\">shuttle Tempesta<\/a> (\u20ac4, 30 min), stopping in via Piccinni (ask the driver) in front of the Boston hotel, or at the main railway station.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>About Bari<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The capital town of the Region lies on the Adriatic coast. The town has the shape of a bird with open wings, whose head forms the nucleus of Bari Vecchia, the old town.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-254\" title=\"bari_lungomare\" src=\"https:\/\/collab.di.uniba.it\/icgse2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/bari_lungomare-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/collab.di.uniba.it\/icgse2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/bari_lungomare-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/collab.di.uniba.it\/icgse2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/bari_lungomare.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Bari was annexed to the Roman Empire in the 3rd century B.C. and over the ages it was an Arab Emirate, later conquered by the Longobards, Bizantines and Saracens. Once the base of the Roman Empire\u2019s fleet for the Orient, the urban structure of the old town is arranged around the Catapan Court.<\/p>\n<p>After the remains of Saint Nicholas were stolen and the homonymous Basilica was built, Bari became a centre of Christianity from where the Crusaders could leave for the Orient. Ruled by Normans, Angevins, Aragons and the Spanish, the town first expanded outside the old part in 1813.<\/p>\n<p>Important monuments in town include the<strong> Basilica of San Nicola<\/strong>, housing the remains of the patron saint, and the <strong>Norman-Swabian Castle<\/strong>, built under the orders of Frederick II for purposes of defence. Places of interest in the old part of the city are the <strong>piazza Mercantile<\/strong> and the Colonna infame, once used as a pillory for insolvent debtors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-255\" title=\"bari_san-nicola\" src=\"https:\/\/collab.di.uniba.it\/icgse2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/bari_san-nicola-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/collab.di.uniba.it\/icgse2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/bari_san-nicola-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/collab.di.uniba.it\/icgse2013\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/10\/bari_san-nicola.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The &#8220;<strong>Old Bari<\/strong>&#8221; district is surrounded by the majestic <strong>Lungomare Imperatore Augusto<\/strong> and the splendid <strong>Piazza del Ferrarese<\/strong>. More modern buildings worth a visit are <strong>Teatro Petruzzelli<\/strong> and <strong>Teatro Margherita<\/strong>. There are also many churches on the reefs and hypogeum cut out of the rock and subsoil. These include: the church of St. Candida and the temple of St. George. Museums which have to be mentioned are the Archaeological Museum, the Provincial picture gallery, the Civic History museum and the Botanical Gardens Institute.
